The Background

Hi all –

I'm the creator of A Fifth of Gaming, the automated video game tournament platform that runs entirely on Bitcoin Cash. (https://afifthofgaming.com/)

I'm also the creator of BitcoinCashClient, the open-source .net library providing the payment rails on which AFoG runs. (https://www.nuget.org/packages/BitcoinCashClient)

I was on Episode 94 of The Bitcoin Cash Podcast, episode 32 of Being Built, and I've been publishing a dev blog every month about ongoing development, all of that here:

The Event

The Bitcoin Cash Podcast, BitcoinCashTV, and I are working to organize and execute a big Magic: The Gathering tournament this Friday, March 15 @ 7pm EST on the A Fifth of Gaming platform.

The tournament is completely free to enter, and registration is now open:

The Goals

There are two goals behind this event. One, obviously, is to attract more attention to AFoG and get more users excited about it. But the other is to introduce as many people as possible to BCH. AFoG tournaments pay out a prize (in BCH) to slightly less than the top half of tournament finishers. So if we can fill all 256 seats of this event (ambitious, I know), that's 200+ users who installed a BCH wallet for the first time (cant register without providing a valid BCH address, our setup guide recommends Selene), and 100+ Magic players receiving BCH for the first time and having their first experience with it be an instant payout from a video game tournament, showing the power and potential of a technology like BCH.

You can see what that looks like here:

The Plan

This Wednesday, Mar 13, I will be making a post in the MagicArena subreddit announcing the tournament and inviting users there to participate. My task between now and then is to raise enough money for the event to generate serious buzz and attract the attention of some big-name MTGA streamers and content creators.

The task between Wednesday and Friday then will be to recruit as many players as possible and fill the bracket. We've created this poster and will be updating and sharing it with MTGA communities once we have finalized the prize pool and sponsors list (these are placeholders).

The Ask

If you like this idea and want to support us, this is where you come in. There are several ways you can help:

First, we need BCH contributions to juice up the prize pool to attract attention and players.

Before I continue let me say that I believe in this project, I believe it is a valuable addition to the BCH ecosystem, and I also would never ask anyone to do something I'm not willing to do myself. That being the case, I am personally matching every satoshi donated (to a limit). I've already committed ~0.65 BCH (~$290) and have 2.25 BCH (~$1000) ready to go.

If you're vibing with this, here are the options you have for contributing:

  1. You can donate anonymously directly to the prize pool. The tournaments wallet address is here: bitcoincash:qpd6ag4ku4xxhvqm000cx20nazr87cs075jtjzfu26
  2. You can donate anonymously to the guild's vault. The vault is used to seed the prize pools of newly created events, so money sent here will fund many tournaments over the next several months. The guild vault is here: bitcoincash:qp2fvlgs6f5zs9luasjkgepxxfaa57l5qgsadmev8c
  3. You can become an official sponsor of the event with your logo and url embedded on the tournament page. Reach out to me directly for details.

Second, we need players! You should play! Yes, you reading this! MTGA is free to play, available on steam, has a great tutorial, and comes with plenty of free cards to throw together a traditional standard deck. You have 4 days! Are you going to win? Well, no probably not. But you'll have a great time participating in the biggest BCH video gaming tournament ever!

And invite your friends! Share the registration link! If you want to be fancy, share the “invite players” link you see on the tournament page and collect some referral bonuses from AFoG.

The more players we can get into the bracket before Wednesday, the more likely additional players will be to pile in.

Third, you can watch the event! If all goes according to plan, the BCH Podcast, BCHTV, and I will all be streaming. Go to the event page during the tournament and the streams should be embedded there. You can support us by tuning in to enjoy the show!

  1. View in your timezone:
    Friday, March 15, 7pm EDT

^(*Assumed EDT instead of EST because DST is observed)

  2. This is going to be an absolute banger, highly recommended to everyone to get involved! You can play for free and whether or not you’re good at Magic help us to welcome a lot of new people into the BCH ecosystem.

  3. A friend of mine is wondering what the format will be? He said he didnt see that info anywhere. “Standard, alchemy, explorer, historic, timeless, draft, cube draft” etc. He wants to know what cards are legal to play.
