Metamask will now collect your IP adress. What are your options?

Consensys, the company that owns MetaMask, just updated its Privacy Policy and fromw now on when you use Infura as your default RPC provider in MetaMask, Infura will collect your IP address and your Ethereum wallet address when you send a transaction.

Options:

Sataying with Metamask:

-If you want to continue using Metamask, you can change your RPC provider. Alchemy is a good option, and you can find a tutorial here. Another option is to change your RPC to “http://localhost:8545”

Ditching Metamask:

Ther's always the option to switch wallets. You can try other popular wallets like TrustWallet or rainbow.me There are other popular options like Rabby, or Coinbase Wallet, but I can't vouch for them as I haven't tried them.

When using DeFi no one should be tracked. Stay safe frens

  1. I do not like this .. I use MetaMask and serves me good. But not good news for sure.

  2. They need to hurry up and airdrop their long awaited governance token to users so we can vote against this shit.

  3. Well that sucks. Ive been using MM ever since Ive been here and now I actually have to look at alternatives. Why do these companies always try to ‘fix’ something that is not broken?

  4. Oh look I live in Cambodia, wait no it’s Italy, good luck catching me in Brazil Metamask.

  5. It all depends of the amout of crypto you have in Metamask. VPN or just don’t bother.

  6. ConsenSys sold MetaMask and Infura, which are critical to the infrastructure of Ethereum.

Key assets like MetaMask were valued as low as $4.4 million and purchased by JPMorgan as well as taking a 10% stake in ConsenSys Software

So thanks to Joseph Lubin JP Morgan basically owns ConsenSys as well as ConsenSys and MetaMask

Centralized isn’t what I’d call it at this point, but it’s looking sketchy long term.

  7. These companies are gonna back hand you one day mark my words. Cold wallet is the only way, and if you are using metamask for digital purchases and such then you better be damn careful.

  8. Well they can finally dox and shame me IRL for all the shitcoins that I buy

The dev Dan finlay already replied that they will fix this.

  10. Moved everything to loopring wallet and gamestop wallet

    Edit: Downvotes? Haha ok

  11. Only use Bitcoin and Monero. No centralized shitcoins so don’t care. Everything else is just a silicon valley start up. They can and will have eventually on chain KYC. If you don’t recognize it then you’re not paying attention.

  12. That’s what many critics of ethereum were screaming for past couple of years that ethererum networking layer is not decentralised. It has been hijacked by centralised infrastructure like Infura.

  13. > Sataying with Metamask

There are few problems that cannot be fixed with seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with peanut sauce.

  14. This is very unfortunate, and unfortunately not unexpected.

The points made above to avoid this are good ones, change your RPC.

You should also, always be using a VPN when connected to any wallet, and using any DeFi dApp, regardless of the wallet or RPC being used.

I recommend a VPN as a general on line security practice as well as a Crypto and DeFi practice.

I love Ethereum for the innovation and great teams building on it, but I see very concerning trends on ethereum and ethereum based tools towards centralization, tracking, and anti privacy.

It is getting more difficult to be psuedo anonymous, let alone anonymous in ethereum and EVM based networks.

The most important narrative this cycle will be privacy, with the only other one close to it being interoperability.

Privacy solutions are becoming necessary to even make a safe transaction. DeFi without privacy is a far worse platform that the current one we are trying to replace. Privacy = security.

Privacy based wallets as well. There are a lot of trackable info that are enabled in wallets that are overlooked, and the IP tracking info has no place to be pushed onto a wallet platform.

I find myself moving more and more out of ETH and into Cosmos and Secret Network, the more I see this trend continue.

Thankfully I can bridge directly from ETH to SCRT.

I do not think the Tornado Cash events being followed by this move are a coincidence.

  15. Why do I have to scroll everytime I want to sign a transaction? ffs fix the UI too

  16. Not sure if Alchemy is an improvement:

“We may collect certain information automatically when you use our Services, such as your Internet protocol (IP) address, user settings, MAC address, cookie identifiers, mobile carrier, mobile advertising and other unique identifiers, browser or device information, location information (including approximate location derived from IP address), and Internet service provider. We may also automatically collect information regarding your use of our Services, such as pages that you visit before, during and after using our Services, information about the links you click, the types of content you interact with, the frequency and duration of your activities, and other information about how you use our Services.”

  17. Why would they risk doing that? Is it regulation, analytics or simply being greedy and want to sell your info?

  18. Just use your own node, it’s simple and that is what they were designed for. People in this space has gotten to lazy to follow the ethos of crypto.

  19. Hey guys,

Just found this workaround, you just need to add another network and apply the following parameters

    Network Name: SecureRPC
    RPC URL: https://api.securerpc.com/v1
    Chain ID: 1
    Symbol: ETH
    Block Explorer URL: https://etherscan.io/

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

  20. Metamask is not collecting your IP… Infura is doing it.

Just change your RPC to another provider, but most of them will log your IP, they always have done it

  21. It’s incredible the amount of misconceptions around this topic.

METAMASK DOES NOT LOG YOUR IP.

Metamask is just a wallet, like ledger or like a piece of paper with a private key written on it.

It also allows you to interface with nodes, like most wallets out there. But to interface with those nodes, is necessary to interact with a blockchain provider, in this case, infura. Infura logs the IP, and will log it if you use with MetaMask OR WITH ANY OTHER WALLET.

You can easily change Infura from your MetaMask wallet

  22. Good thing GameStop just released their mobile wallet! Got all mine switched over the other day
