Can I add a password after I’ve already created the wallet and had my keys generated?

Can I add a passphrase after I've already created the wallet and had my keys generated? If yes, what is the process?

Or do I need to start all over form the beginning and create a new wallet and seed phrase?

I got a new Trezor T1 a few days ago. I already set it up and moved my Bitcoin over to it. However, I've been reading about how adding a passphrase is an extra layer of protection and I think it's a good idea.

Also, just so I'm clear, does that mean the passphrase takes effect at the blockchain level, or just through Trezor interface?

To be clear, for example, I have a 12 word seed phrase generated by Trezor + a passphrase I created. I keep my seed phrase backup written down on a piece of paper, but I memorize my passphrase.

Someone breaks into my apartment and finds my seed phrase. They then go to Electrum, Metamask, Trezor or whatever platform and try to access my Crypto.

Will they be able to access it, or will they need my passphrase as well?

  1. No. The BIP39 passphrase combines with a mnemonic to generate a whole new seed.

Any one character or word changes, whole new seed.

  2. Never digitise your Seed Recovery information, except to a hardware wallet or other dedicated airgapped device. Certainly never on anything capable of connecting to the internet.

Etched onto steel plates, stored in multiple secure locations far from home, secure passphrase separately from 24-word mnemonic

  3. From what you wrote it’s not fully clear to me if you’re really talking about a passphrase to the mnemonic seed words? Or a passphrase to access your Trezor device? Or a passphrase to access the software on your PC that connects to your Trezor?

  4. Think of it as two separate seed phrases and two separate wallets, one has 12 words and one has 13 words
Both have same 1 through 12
Second one has your passphrase as 13th word
